| ITALY WILDFLOWER DISCOVERY |
|
|
| |
Our 8 day Gargano Peninsula walking tour is in the Italian spring
– the ideal time to see an array of plants flowering on the
limestone plateau and in the deciduous woodlands including cyclamen,
anemones, narcissi, grape hyacinths, pansies, irises, orchids and
the occasional peony; while the most brilliant patches of colour in
the lowlands are created by poppies, crown daisies and other annuals.
Our spring trips are planned to catch the coastal displays as well
as allowing us to move back several weeks through the seasons as we
climb to the heights where the land becomes a natural limestone rockery.
The Gargano has many endemic plants - including relatives of the British
Bee Orchid (Ophrys apifera) - the Siponto Bee Orchid (Ophrys sipontensis)
and Promontory Orchid (Ophrys promontorii). The inland landscape with
its extensive limestone pavements is an inspiration for gardeners
with wonderful random arrangements of anemones, multi-coloured pansies,
yellow or blue dwarf irises and numerous other species.
We also encounter the first butterflies in spring and bird life is
influenced by the spring migration. Watch out for golden oriole, hoopoe,
blue rock, thrush and several raptors (harrier, peregrine, kestral,
sparrowhawk and short-toed eagle), along with owls (including long-eared,
Scops and eagle owl) and woodpeckers.
This 8 day walk can be incorporated with other travels in Europe.
The tour utilizes 3 base hotels and we have 2 or 3 nights in each.
There are walks and free time on each day and there is no compulsion
to undertake each days activities.
